В позднесредневековой прозаической повести о Фаусте и ее переработках, получивших общее название «Народные книги о Фаусте», представлена основная сюжетная формула, которая будет присутствовать во многих последующих драматизациях легенды: две главные фигуры, учёный Фауст и его демонический антагонист и искуситель Мефистофель; договор, скрепленный кровью; женщина-соблазнительница, увлекающая Фауста к проклятию; деградация главного героя. В образе Фауста и немецкая, и английская книги показывают парадоксальное сочетание высоких устремлений и низкой похоти, задорного юмора и трагического отчаяния.
Выдающийся английский драматург Кристофер Марло усугубил парадоксальность оригинального текста, создав на основе его одну из самых проблематичных пьес во всей западной литературе. Немногие произведения литературы вызывали столь яростные споры, как «Трагическая история Доктора Фауста» Марло. Впервые появившаяся на театральных подмостках до-шекспировского театра трагедия Кристофера Марло «Доктор Фауст» знаменовала собой начало новой театральной эпохи. С ней в театр пришел Ренессанс, шагая на котурнах азартной Реформации, отбивающегося католицизма и зарождающегося атеизма. В статье рассматриваются взаимоотношения главных персонажей пьесы Марло, особое внимание уделяется обрисовке образа Мефистофеля как «дьявола для элиты». Автор подчеркивает новаторство Кристофера Марло в создании образа дьявола, наполненного глубоким трагизмом и психологизмом – образа, послужившего основой для произведений многих современных писателей, театральных деятелей и кино-режиссеров.
